How to Include your DHH students
Tips for General Education/Special Education Teachers & Staff
ASL Users
Set your classroom up in a U shape so that all of the students can see eachother signing
Get your students’ attention by flicking the lights on and off, waving your hands, or stomping your feet (this doesn’t work on concrete floors)
Remind students that only one person can be signing at a time
If there is an interpreter, make sure the students can see both them and you
Ask students to confirm they understood the directions when you are done giving them
Give students pre-warnings about fire/earthquake/tornado/shelter-in-place or other safety drills
Address students, not interpreters
Minimize background noise
Use visual cues and include closed captions
Listening/Spoken Language Users

Get your students’ attention before talking and make sure they are looking at you when you speak
Remind students that only one person can be talking at a time
Ensure that any amplification (hearing aids, FM/HAT systems, etc) are on and working properly
Ask students to confirm they understood the directions when you are done giving them
Give students pre-warnings about fire/earthquake/tornado/shelter-in-place or other safety drills
Speak clearly and at a typical speed and volume
Minimize background noise
Use visual cues and include closed captions
