ASL Interpreters
Resources & Training
As the use of interpretation is an integral part of the lives of Deaf students who sign,
Engage Ed also supports DHH students by creating partnerships between the interpreting community &
DHH students, as well as providing high quality professional development to sign language interpreters
Self-advocacy education is an invaluable portion of a Deaf student’s education.
A wide-ranging topic including Deaf culture and history, legal rights and entitlements in relation to the use of interpreters,
Engage-Ed focuses on ensuring that Deaf students are familiar with the various laws guaranteeing access,
how to provide feedback/make changes to achieve access tailored to their communication styles,
as well as how to request access services in various settings (including advocating for effective accommodations in real world settings)
Since sign language interpreters serve a vital role in the lives of Deaf people throughout their entire lifespan,
Engage Ed partners with interpreters in schools and the community in order to provide Deaf students the opportunity to graduate
ready to manage their access with their own hands
Given the many hats that educational interpreters find themselves wearing, the disconnect between the wider interpreting community
& those providing scholastic access, as well as the general unfamiliarity that many community interpreters have with
Deaf children/teens/young adults, Engage Ed endeavors to provide high quality professional development for interpreters
One of the best ways to support improvement in the quality of services Deaf children/teens/young adults receive,
is by developing & offering members of the interpreting community these opportunities
